Spanish white wine
Discover the Spanish white wines selected by our sommeliers.
When speaking of spanish white wine, we usually just think of those from Rías Baixas, Rueda and Penedès. However, great white wines can be found in many other regions across Spain, such as La Rioja, Empordà or Costers del Segre. Although white wine is usually young, an increasing amount of wineries are producing more complex white wines, with fermentation on lees in wood and large ageing processes similar to those of some Spanish reds. In regards to grape varieties, in addition to foreign grapes such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, Spain is home to an impressive range of native spanish white wine varieties such as Godello, Verdejo, Albariño and Viura, or Macabeo as it is known in Catalonia.
The Profiles Defining Spain's White Wine Map
Each region contributes a unique personality thanks to the richness of our grape varieties:
-
Atlantic Freshness: In Rías Baixas and other areas of Galicia, Albariño is the star. These are saline, vibrant wines with a citrus acidity that makes them irresistible.
-
The Revival of Godello: From Valdeorras and Bierzo, Godello offers the perfect balance: it has the verticality of a white but the body and creaminess of a red, with an elegance that captivates.
-
The Character of Verdejo: Rueda remains the benchmark for aromatic and lively whites. However, a new generation of winemakers is demonstrating that Verdejo from old vines and sandy soils can be profound and mineral.
-
The Structure of the Mediterranean: Varieties such as Xarel·lo in Penedès or Garnacha Blanca in Terra Alta provide volume, notes of Mediterranean fruit, and an ideal structure to accompany an entire meal.
-
The Nobility of Rioja: In Rioja, Viura shows that whites can age for decades in barrels, gaining complexity full of nuances.
Wineries and Notable Names
In this selection, you will find the architects of this revolution:
-
Masters of Precision: Wineries such as Zárate, Rafael Palacios, or Rodrigo Méndez, who have elevated Galician grapes to cult status.
-
Benchmarks of the Plateau: Names like Belondrade y Lurton, Ossian, or Dominio del Águila, who have redefined what we expect from a white from Castilla.
-
Guardians of Tradition: Houses like Muga, whose whites are examples of longevity and classic elegance.
-
Visionaries of the Mediterranean: Producers such as Pepe Mendoza, Enric Soler, or Herència Altés, who bottle the pure essence of Levante and Catalonia.
The finest Spanish white wines: from the classic offerings of Rioja to the vibrant innovations from Gredos or Galicia. Discover a unique selection from all our regions.
