About Versos de Valtuille Paraje Villegas

In the wine world, it's not quite as spectacular, yet winemakers are gaining increasing significance. César Márquez, nephew of the renowned oenologist Raúl Pérez, is part of this new generation of producers garnering international acclaim, captivating experts such as Luis Gutiérrez for The Wine Advocate and Master of Wine Tim Atkin. The winery Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos, based in Valtuille de Abajo, celebrated his recruitment to shape the Versos de Valtuille series, a project that places the spotlight on the rural figure and demonstrates that young talent can transform each plot into a masterpiece.

From Valtuille de Abajo, in the heart of the DO Bierzo, Versos de Valtuille Paraje Villegas originates from a century-old vineyard of mencía and alicante bouschet, situated at an altitude of 500 metres. Its bush vines, with an average age of 90 years, thrive on loamy clay soils with streaks of sand that impart finesse and character. Under a transitional Atlantic climate, the cultivation philosophy is rooted in utmost respect for the environment, practising artisanal viticulture and careful manual harvesting.

The production of Versos de Valtuille Paraje Villegas follows a meticulous and artisanal process in the winery. After the manual harvest of the grapes, alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in a French oak foudre, a large wooden vessel. During this phase, the cap is kept moist by gravity, gently submerging the upper layer of grape skins to extract colour and aromas without crushing the fruit. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, a second natural transformation that softens the acidity, in 225 and 500-litre French oak barrels. Finally, the wine completes a 12-month ageing period in these same noble wood barrels before being bottled.
