About Garcibuey

Can you imagine discovering a grape that likely doesn't feature on your usual list of favourite reds? The rufete variety holds something of a well-kept secret in the Sierra de Salamanca: an uncommon variety, especially when presented on its own, capable of producing wines with character without losing that freshness that compels you to keep exploring them. Garcibuey is one of those bottles that appear along the journey and end up expanding the map.
 
Behind it stands Viñas Serranas, a small personal project by César Ruiz, founder of the Madrid wine shop "La Tintorería", born from the desire to showcase everything this landscape has to offer. Since 2007, their wines have traversed various corners of the Sierra de Salamanca (Castilla y León), working with vineyards cultivated organically and biodynamically, focusing on varieties and plots that speak to the identity of the region.
 
The grape hails from vineyards rooted in slate and schist and is hand-harvested to ferment with indigenous yeasts. It then spends 13 months in French oak barrels of varying sizes, gaining depth without losing its fresh character. The result is a rufete red wine that is well-rounded and structured, with an elegant rusticity and a delicate balsamic undertone that imparts personality without disguising its origin.
 
There are wines that merely fill a glass and others that make you wonder why you hadn't tried something like this before. Garcibuey belongs to the latter: a small production, a variety with much to tell, and a landscape that gradually reveals itself with each sip. One of those discoveries worth making without haste.
