About Domaine Joseph Chamonard Morgon

In the mid-20th century, as industrialisation threatened to homogenise the vineyards of Beaujolais, a small group of vintners decided to halt time and return to their roots. Inspired by the teachings of Jules Chauvet, the spiritual father of natural wine, legendary producers like Joseph Chamonard proved that it was possible to craft deep, pure, and vibrant wines without resorting to chemical additives. After Chamonard's passing in the early 1990s, his legacy did not fade but continued to thrive on the estate thanks to the respectful and quiet work of his family.

With the guidance of his daughter Geneviève and her husband Jean-Claude Chanudet, "Le Chat", they present Domaine Joseph Chamonard Morgon. A wine originating from historic plots situated on slopes with magnificent sun exposure, in the heart of Morgon, one of the most prestigious and renowned appellations of Beaujolais. The old gamay vines sink their roots into the celebrated soils of schist and decomposing granite, locally known as roches pourries or rotten rocks, which impart a unique mineral texture and depth. The climate is continental with oceanic influences, ensuring cold winters, mild summers, and a slow ripening of the fruit. Adhering to a philosophy of fully organic cultivation and absolute respect for biodiversity, all vineyard work is carried out manually, nurturing the soil's life so the plant can express itself freely.

The production of Domaine Joseph Chamonard Morgon is governed by the non-interventionist ethos that has defined the domain since its inception. The harvest is conducted manually to carefully select whole bunches at their optimal ripeness. Once in the winery, the whole grapes are placed in vats to undergo traditional carbonic maceration, a technique where alcoholic fermentation begins naturally inside each grape before being pressed. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, the natural yeasts present on the grape skin, without the addition of sulphites or oenological products. After gentle pressing, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and rests for an extended period of ageing in used wooden barrels to refine its texture without imparting oak aromas, and is finally bottled without clarification or filtration.

Domaine Joseph Chamonard Morgon is a fluid, profound, and immensely expressive red, where memories of fresh red fruit, violet notes, and an earthy background blend into a silky and vibrant palate. A true homage to a great legacy.
