About Caneco
There are moments in life when it is necessary to pause, reflect, and make courageous decisions. This is precisely what Rosa Pedrosa did when she chose to leave her research position at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid to return to Pontevedra. Her aim was to join her brother Fran and channel all her energy into a small, old vineyard of just half a hectare that they both inherited in 1990. Together with Ruth Campelo and Nacho Jiménez, they established the Narupa project, a shared venture by four partners where the albariño grape takes centre stage.
From the Valle del Salnés, in the province of Pontevedra and under the stringent oversight of the DO Rías Baixas, Caneco is born in a small, cherished old vineyard tended as if it were a garden. The albariño vines delve their roots into decomposed granite soils, a typical rock of the area that imparts a distinctive mineral texture and enviable acidity to the grape. The climate bears a clear Atlantic influence, with abundant, well-distributed rainfall and mild temperatures that allow for a leisurely ripening of the fruit. Committed to the utmost respect for soil health and the environment, the vineyard is managed with highly respectful viticulture, applying exclusively zero-residue and biologically sourced treatments to enable the plant to express itself free from chemicals.
In the crafting of Caneco, a meticulous and artisanal process is followed, designed to preserve the fruit's natural freshness. The harvest is conducted manually to ensure that the grape clusters arrive whole and in perfect sanitary condition at the winery. After destemming and gentle pressing, the must is transferred to stainless steel tanks to carry out the alcoholic fermentation, the biological process by which yeasts naturally convert sugars into alcohol. Once fermentation is complete, the wine undergoes ageing and resting in these same tanks to preserve its primary aromas and refine its palate before bottling.
Caneco is the direct result of this return to origins, a modest white in scale but immense in emotion, demonstrating that knowledge and love for family are the finest driving forces for crafting wines with soul.
