Álvaro Palacios is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in Spanish wine on an international level, credited with putting Priorat on the global map of high-end winemaking. Born in Alfaro, La Rioja, into a renowned winemaking family, his journey led him to train in Bordeaux and work at iconic wineries such as Château Pétrus. With a vision of excellence and the French concept of grand cru, he decided in 1989 to forge his own path in the rugged landscape of Priorat, where he recognised the unparalleled potential of its old vines of Garnacha and Cariñena cultivated in black slate soils (llicorella). His determination and focus on terroir led him to create wines that are now legendary, such as L'Ermita, one of Spain's most sought-after and acclaimed cult treasures.

The innovative spirit of Álvaro Palacios did not stop in Catalonia. His philosophy of crafting wines that express the uniqueness of the vineyard expanded to other key regions of the peninsula. He is co-owner, alongside his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, of Descendientes de J. Palacios in Bierzo, where they have propelled the Mencía grape to stardom with wines like Pétalos del Bierzo. Furthermore, he took the helm of the family winery Palacios Remondo in Rioja Oriental (Alfaro), demonstrating the great potential of Garnacha in that area with labels such as La Montesa and Quiñón de Valmira. His work in these three denominations (Priorat, Bierzo, and Rioja) confirms his status as a winemaker who honours tradition while defining the future of Spain's great estate wines.
