Tasting notes Valduero Rosado Reserva 2016

Rosé wine Aged in wood. 48 meses en barrica.

Valduero Rosado Reserva 2016 boasts a striking ruby hue adorned with elegant golden highlights, hinting at the complexity that will unfold in the glass. On the nose, it surprises with enveloping aromas of red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries, intertwined with a subtle presence of wood, touches of vanilla, fresh rosemary, and a smoky hint that invites further exploration. On the palate, the freshness and liveliness of albillo are wonderfully complemented by the deeper notes of cassis and spices derived from tempranillo and its time in oak. The year 2016 was notably balanced, which favoured optimal ripening, making this rosé both sophisticated and approachable, ideal for those seeking a wine with character and elegance.

About Valduero Rosado Reserva

At the age of fourteen, a young Kate Winslet, the star of "Titanic," was told by her drama teacher that she would only achieve any success if she resigned herself to supporting roles as a fat girl. Years later, she accepted the Oscar, acknowledging that the lack of emotional support became her greatest fuel. A similar experience befell Yolanda García Viadero when, at just thirteen years old, she confided to the nuns at her school that she aspired to become an agricultural engineer. The response was a blunt, "At best, you could be a hairdresser." From that impetus of rebellion and pride emerged one of the most daring trajectories in Spanish wine. Together with her family, she founded Bodegas Valduero in Gumiel de Mercado, becoming, alongside her sister Carolina, one of the first women with technical qualifications to lead a winery in the Ribera del Duero.

From Gumiel de Mercado, in the province of Burgos and under the auspices of the DO Ribera del Duero, Valduero Rosado Reserva originates from two very special plots named Fincas La Yunquera and Fuentepinedo. The vineyard is situated at a privileged altitude between 850 and 900 metres above sea level, where the elevation provides a significant thermal variation with freezing nights and hot days. The climate is purely continental, with sparse precipitation of barely 400 millimetres annually and extreme temperatures ranging from 40 °C in summer to 19 °C below zero in winter. The tempranillo vines, trained in the traditional bush system, are 35 years old, while the albillo mayor, the native white grape trained on trellises, reaches 25 years. Both grow on sandy pebble and clay soils with very low yields of 4,000 kilograms per hectare. Cultivation is carried out with absolute respect for biodiversity, using natural sheep manure and without applying artificial irrigation.

The production of Valduero Rosado Reserva demands absolute technical precision at every stage of the process. Harvesting is done manually in small 14-kilogram boxes, and once at the winery, the grapes are cooled overnight to 4 °C to preserve their aromas before being crushed and vatting. White and red grapes ferment together in co-fermentation using indigenous yeasts, those naturally present on the fruit's skin, undergoing a pre-maceration before pressing. The alcoholic fermentation, the biological process in which yeasts convert sugars into alcohol, occurs at a controlled maximum temperature of 12 °C to retain a powerful aromatic load. Once this phase is completed, the wine embarks on an unusual ageing process for a rosé, as it remains in oak barrels of various origins for four years, refining its structure before its final bottling.

Valduero Rosado Reserva is an enveloping, complex wine of overwhelming elegance. A rosé designed not for hurried summer consumption, but to mature over the years and demonstrate that brilliance is born from never accepting an imposed limit.
