About Valdespino Manzanilla La Especial

“Special”. We use it frequently, yet it rarely captures its true essence. Something special is not merely different; it is distinguished by its quality, history, and uniqueness. This is precisely what Manzanilla La Especial de Valdespino embodies.

In Sanlúcar de Barrameda, facing the Guadalquivir River and the Atlantic, this wine is born from static ageing, an unusual method in Jerez that allows each vintage to speak for itself, independent of the traditional Solera and Criaderas system. Since 2015, the historic Jerez winery Valdespino has meticulously selected a series of casks each year to be part of this unique collection.

Valdespino Manzanilla La Especial hails from a single vineyard, Miraflores La Baja, the true “Grand Cru” of Sanlúcar. Its 70-year-old vines, planted in albariza soil, yield clusters of the palomino variety that encapsulate the character of the place. The sea breeze and proximity to the river impart a freshness and salinity that can be tasted in every sip.

Following spontaneous fermentation in American oak casks and careful racking, only 12 selected casks mature for 8 years under a veil of flor, in static ageing. The result is bottled en rama, with minimal filtration, preserving all its original qualities intact.

This entire production process culminates in its presentation. The bottle of Manzanilla La Especial pays homage to the original Valdespino models from the early 20th century: green Rhin model glass and a sunken cork stopper, a nod to the tradition and classic style of the winery. With all this, it is clear that its name, “La Especial”, is no coincidence: it is a true statement of intent.
