About Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo

Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo is a red wine from the D.O. Bierzo, crafted by the winery Descendientes de J. Palacios. It is a varietal wine made exclusively from Mencía.

The grapes used are sourced from plots of very old vines, aged between 50 and 90 years. These vines have a low yield, which ensures the fruit is of exceptional quality. The vineyards from which Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo originates are primarily planted on slate soils and are situated on slopes. The harvest is conducted manually, with the initial selection taking place in the vineyard itself.

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are destemmed and undergo fermentation for approximately 25 days in open wooden vats and stainless steel tanks. A subsequent malolactic fermentation occurs over two months in closed wooden vats and stainless steel tanks. Thereafter, Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo matures for 10 months in French oak barrels and, prior to bottling, it is filtered and clarified.

It is worth highlighting the esteemed reputation of Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos del Bierzo, as in the 2011 vintage it was acknowledged as the Spanish wine with the best quality-price ratio by Robert Parker.

Descendientes de J. Palacios is owned by Ricardo Pérez Palacios, nephew of the renowned winemaker Álvaro Palacios, who is celebrated for his outstanding work in the D.O.Q. Priorat and collaborates with the family winery.

Pétalos del Bierzo 2019 is an eloquent red wine characterized by its expressive red fruit aromas, hints of violet florals, and nuanced spicy black pepper notes. On the palate, it is meaty, light, and invigorating. This succulent wine boasts a lively acidity and a delightful finish.

 

 
2018 Pétalos del Bierzo 2018 is an aromatically intense red wine with fruity and floral notes accompanied by mineral nuances. On the palate this red wine is fresh, sweet and intense.
2016 Pétalos del Bierzo has found the fluidity it has been given by the excellent 2016 vintage with a predominant Atlantic climate.  A wine with an aromatic character of violets and red fruits that perfectly combine with a light structure in the mouth. A wine to be introduced to the fantastic region of El Bierzo.
2013 Good acidity, it is intense and rather oily. Very soft and nice.

Cherry red with violet edges. Good intensity.

Powerful and aromatic. Floral notes of jasmine and violet notes of cinnamon and red fruit.
2012 A very expressive Bierzo wine, very flavourful. A good, broad attack, with a long, velvety mid palate. Fresh and intense. Lots of fruit and flowers with tantalizing spiced notes. Good acidity and polished tannins. A long and persistent finish. A great value wine.

Pretty cherry red. Dark, clean and bright, with a violet rim. A fine, slow falling tear.

An elevated intensity nose, with a marked varietal character. Lots of red and ripe dark fruit, accompanied by intense and aromatic floral notes. Once opened, it gains complexity and a surprising minerality as well as mellow and elegant toasted notes. A light undertone reminiscent of shrubs.
2011 An expressive and very tasty wine from Bierzo. Good and wide attack with a long velvety, fresh and intense mid palate. Its abundant notes of fruit at flowers are nuanced by mellow spicy notes. Good acidity and polished tannins. Long and persistent finish. Excellent value (and pleasure) for money.

2010 Very expressive and tasty Bierzo wine, with a good broad and velvety attack and a long, fresh and intense mid palate. Its abundant notes of fruit and flowers are nuanced by mellow hints of sweet spices. It shows a good acidity and polished tannins. It has a good finish with a good and very nice persistence.  A seductive wine.

Marked and elegant varietal aromas. Its abundant notes of ripe red and black fruit are released along with intense and aromatic floral notes. When it opens up, the wine becomes more complex and a surprising minerality appears along with soft and elegant toasted and smoked aromas. Its light background shows aromas of bushes and undergrowth.
2009 Good attack. Fresh, very tasty, sweet and intense wine with a silky mid palate. Tannins not completely polished yet and a correct acidity. Long finish with fruity aftertaste.

Intense dark cherry red colour. High layer. Abundant legs that stain the glass.

Very good aromatic intensity, with good toasted aromas slightly marked and light fruity notes. When it opens up, the ripe black fruit gains in intensity and becomes the star along with the milky notes, the subtle floral notes and a pleasant balsamic hints.
2008 In the mouth, we find everything we perceive in the nose: lots of flowers along with fresh blueberries and balsamic notes. The tannins just perceived. Step velvety.
