About La Pequeñita Malvasía Tinajas
There are so many wineries in Rioja that it can sometimes be challenging to decide which one to visit if you wish to venture beyond the comfort zone. On the fringes of the more frequented circuits, the Alonso & Pedrajo winery, based in Villalba de Rioja, stands as a fascinating choice for those seeking the unadulterated essence of the region. Born from the collaboration of two families united by their passion for the land, this establishment champions artisanal viticulture on a small scale where each creation is a micro-narrative. Their project revolves around respecting natural rhythms and reviving ancestral vessels to allow the fruit to express itself freely.
From Villalba de Rioja, at the westernmost and coolest edge of the DOCa Rioja, La Pequeñita Malvasía Tinajas originates in the La Cala estate, a privileged site situated at an altitude of 640 meters. The malvasía riojana vines, a historic variety of great finesse and notable freshness, are over 80 years old, rooted in soils that combine clay and limestone. The area's climate enjoys an enviable position, benefiting from the combined influence of the Atlantic and Mediterranean climates, which bring cold winters, mild summers, and marked thermal contrasts between day and night that allow for a slow maturation. Adhering to a philosophy of respectful cultivation, the vineyard employs minimal intervention viticulture to preserve the biodiversity and life of this centuries-old viticultural heritage.
The production of La Pequeñita Malvasía Tinajas follows a purely artisanal process focused on accompanying the grape without masking it. After the manual harvesting of the clusters, the fruit is selected, destemmed, separating the berries from the green parts or stems, and placed in clay jars. In these traditional clay vessels, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation under a philosophy of minimal intervention to respect the grape's essence. Once fermentation is complete and after the initial rest in clay, the wine is transferred to oak barrels of 228 and 500 litres where it undergoes its ageing and maturation period, gaining complexity, volume, and elegance without losing the freshness inherent to the altitude.
La Pequeñita Malvasía Tinajas is a profound white wine, with great texture and character, possessing a wild tension that lingers in the memory. A true delight for the palate of those daring enough to explore beyond the Riojan comfort zone.
