About Dominio del Challao

The surname Michelini is synonymous with wine. For years, this Argentine family has traversed the globe in search of unique vineyards, from Argentina and Uruguay to Spain, always with the aim of crafting wines that faithfully reflect the character of each terroir.

Now, the Michelini saga takes a further step with the youngest family member, who has found his passion in La Rioja. Together with Carlos Fernández, a producer and viticulturist with generations rooted in his family project, he embarks on an adventure that blends tradition and creativity in the picturesque village of Labastida. There, among vineyards that span five of their own plots, they constitute 6 hectares of 100% biodynamic vineyard, cultivated with animal traction, and situated in various valleys that capture the essence of the Riojan landscape.

Among the wines this project produces, Dominio del Challao stands out, a meticulous selection of garnacha, garnacha blanca, graciano, malvasía, tempranillo, and viura. Their vineyards, located at the highest point of Labastida at 580 metres altitude and with a northeast orientation, are bush-trained and range in age from 1945 to 2001, on soils of sand, marl, and limestone.

The harvest combines traditional and modern techniques. Forty percent of the bunches are foot-trodden whole, while sixty percent are destemmed without crushing. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats for 10 days, followed by 30 days of maceration before pressing in a horizontal pneumatic press, and subsequently, the malolactic fermentation is completed. The wine ages for 24 months in 500-litre foudres and rests another 6 months in the bottle, without fining or filtration, to preserve the purity and authenticity of the terroir.

The Michelini project in Rioja not only reflects this family's relentless pursuit of excellence; it is also a tribute to the slow and committed work, to the land and winemaking tradition, combined with the curiosity and boldness of new generations.
