About Altún Vistalegre

In Rioja, the banks of the Ebro have always been renowned for their fertile soils, but also for being the most expensive. It was there, far from the coveted lands, where in 1929 Balbino Martínez decided to plant his vineyard on challenging and complex terrain. Over the years, climate change and new insights have transformed that plot into a unique corner, a treasure that his grandchildren, Iker and Alberto Martínez Pangua, have adeptly turned into wines that faithfully express the character of the terroir.

The brothers have made quality their utmost priority, focusing on precision and authenticity over the expansion of hectares. Their aim is not to grow in volume, but in value: to extend their wines to new international markets and to occupy spaces where every detail of their production is appreciated. Every decision, from vineyard to barrel, reflects this philosophy of respect for the land and pursuit of excellence.

Altún Vistalegre is born from a 1.65-hectare plot planted in 1974 on terraces resting on tertiary deposits of sands, calcareous sandstones, and yellowish clays, a soil that imparts complexity and depth to each cluster of the tempranillo variety. The harvest is conducted manually, grape by grape. Fermentation takes place in 1,000-litre vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation in 500-litre French oak barrels, where the wine remains for 14 months until it achieves balance and full expression.

Altún Vistalegre is the story of a family that learned to read the land and listen to it, merging tradition and innovation in every bottle. It is the demonstration that in viticulture, growth does not always mean expanding hectares, but gaining in character, authenticity, and quality.
